I usually don’t read books set in the medieval time period, but I was drawn to this story line and glad I read this novel.
It is difficult enough for heroine Brithwin to accept an arranged marriage after the death of her father, but she is also forced to face the accusations her husband makes that she murdered his family.
Hero Royce is filled with grief and thoughts of revenge when he finds his family has been murdered, and since all signs point to his new wife, he’s determined to see justice served. Yet, he hadn’t bargained for the independent, enterprising, and charming nature of the woman he married.
Both characters carry weighty issues into their marriage, adding a rich element to their faith journey and the development of their relationship.
The novel has its share of evil characters who add to the mix, plotting and scheming to cast shadows of doubt and distrust over Brithwin and Royce.
The plot twists and turns added intrigue and kept me turning the pages.
The book was packed with action and danger as well as a deep revelation of feelings of guilt, remorse, anger, and fear by both characters, culminating in a beautiful ending where both find redemption and discover a deep love for each other.
I thoroughly enjoyed this first book in Debbie Lynn Costello’s Winds of Change series. I recommend it to readers who enjoy this time period and appreciate a story of conflict and redemption with well-developed characterization.
