Butterfly Dreams by Bonnie Engstrom is a delightful and refreshing romance between two people who find love later in life. Told in first person by main character Betsy, the story brings out the joys and pitfalls of taking a new relationship along on the journey to our senior years.
Love interest Noel can be the most charming, and yet the most frustrating man to ever catch Betsy’s eye, who was really not even looking in the first place.
I especially enjoyed the relationship between Betsy and her daughter, Brie, who appears on the scene pregnant and abandoned by her less than gallant husband. The ending, revealing the relationship between Betsy and friend Bett came as a total surprise.
The author paints realistic characters who face disappointments and frustrations with faith, courage, honesty, and a healthy helping of humor.
Oh, and if you happen to be open to some excellent culinary advice, you’ll find that sprinkled throughout the book as well. All in all, an enjoyable read.
This is Bonnie Engstrom’s debut novel. I look forward to more of her work.
