Recipe for a Husband by Anne Greene

Recipe for a Husband by Anne Greene takes readers on a journey to 1940 in Bar Harbor, Maine.  Nessie McDonald has been managing the lighthouse plus taking care of her blind mother since her father, the lighthouse keeper, passed away.  She tried to hire help locally, but no one is willing to work for what Nessie can afford.  She needs a husband by Thanksgiving (before winter sets in) to help with the chores since she must climb the one hundred steps to the lighthouse twice a day.  Nessie has advertised in Bar Harbor Times and plans to cook a gourmet meal from Lady Jane’s New England Cookbook for each prospective husband.  She believes that God will bring the right man to her.  One night she observes the schooner, Outback run aground.  Nessie rushes out and saves the only survivor.  Kyle Cameron was coming to America to sell wool from his brother’s sheep station in Perth, Australia.  His leg is broken, and Kyle is bedridden on a cot in the kitchen for the next few weeks.  As Nessie entertains each applicant, Kyle observes each man and then offers his own brand of constructive criticism afterward.  Kyle is attracted to Nessie and would love to stay, but he has obligations at home.  As Thanksgiving approaches, Nessie must make a choice between her prospective husbands.  The only man she really wants is Kyle.  What does God have in store for Kyle and Nessie?

Recipe for a Husband is an engaging story.  I found this Christian romance to be well-written and the story flowed at a steady pace.  I loved the characters.  Nessie, Kyle and Laura (the mother) are a delight.  They are hardworking, Christian people.  Kyle dislikes being confined to the cot in the kitchen, but he does enjoy the dinner shows.  His criticisms of each applicant were hilarious.  The dialogue was witty.  There are beautiful descriptions of the Atlantic Ocean, Bar Harbor and the lighthouse.  I could envision the rocky coastline and I cringed every time Nessie had to go up the one hundred steps up the lighthouse (which she had to do twice a day).  Nessie found Lady Jane’s New England Cookbook in the lighthouse and she finds it helpful.  It offers advice with scripture which she uses to help her pick the right recipes to fix for her with her potential mates.  God had a plan for Nessie and Kyle.  There are recipes included.  Recipe for a Husband is a  heartwarming and humorous tale.

Anne Greene writes charming and diverting Christian romances.  Thank you for joining me today.  I hope you have a blessed day.  Take care and Happy Reading!
