Caught By Surprise concludes Ms. Turano’s Apart from the Crowd trilogy. Temperance Flowerdew comes into her own after being accidentally kidnapped off the streets in New York City. When she finds herself in Chicago, an old friend from her childhood comes to her rescue. Gilbert Cavendish spent much of his childhood with Temperance, as their parents were best friends. Gilbert lost track of Temperance during her globe-trotting years, but he is determined to rediscover her whereabouts and save her reputation by proposing marriage. Unfortunately for Gilbert, Temperance is determined to remain an independent woman and come into her own after years of grieving her parents. Along with the other characters introduced through the Apart from the Crowd novels, Temperance and Gilbert are determined to solve her kidnapping and a series of other mysterious events.
Ms. Turano expertly concludes her Apart from the Crowd series, wrapping up the story of her cast of social wallflowers in humorous fashion. Fans of Ms. Turano’s work will be thrilled with Temperance and Gilbert’s cross-country escapades.
Overall, I enjoyed reading Caught By Surprise! Ms. Turano’s novels are always fun reads and Caught By Surprise is no exception. Throughout the Apart from the Crowd series, Ms. Turano develops a fascinating set of characters, even as they manage to avoid taking themselves too seriously. Similar to her other books, this novel is a relatively light read, with just enough historical detail to place it firmly in the appropriate period and locations of the storyline. While I’m sad to see this series end, I am also excited to see what Ms. Turano writes next, as she releases the first book in a new series in early 2019!
