To the *963 Goodreads members who entered my recent 10-book giveaway of Every Hill and Mountain thanks for participating! To the ten winners congratulations! The books are in the mail.
The giveaway ended today and here are the winners’ copies all ready to be mailed out to them. Inside each book is a personal note, asking the reader to please write a review. I wished I'd logged the time it took for the whole process: signing each book, inserting the personal notes (it took me at least 30 minutes to compose it), addressing the packages, and taking them to the post office. (Include more time spent standing in line.)
And then there's the expense. That's ten books (fortunately authors get them at a discounted rate), the padded envelopes, mailing labels, along with about $2.50 in postage each to get them to the winners.
Does this give you a clue about the lengths to which authors will go to get reviews for their books? It’s a lot of work and expense, and there’s no guarantee any of the winners will post a review, or if they do that it will be positive.
But I go to the trouble because reviews are valuable. Reviews lend credibility to books and their authors. Reviews help browsers choose books to purchase, which then make the book's rank rise, which then leads to more sales.
Katherine Paterson's novel, The Bridge to Terabithia has 1, 008 reviews as of this morning. The book won the prestigious Newberry Award. I wonder which came first--the multitudinous reviews or the award.
I'm not expecting such honors, but I would like to make my books findable in the online bookstores. So if you have been meaning to post a review of any of my books and haven’t gotten around to it, please do so.
For Amazon.com go to the Deborah Heal Author Page and click on the book you wish to comment on. Scroll down to "Customer Reviews" and then scroll some more to the "Write a Customer Review" button. Click on that and you'll be able to post your review. (You must be an Amazon customer.)
Goodreads is another wonderful place to post your review (if you're a member). Go to my Goodreads Author Page and click on the link for the book you want. Then click on the bar titled "My Review" (Just under the buy links.) and enter your comments.
After you post your review(s) pat yourself on the back. You have just supported an Indie writer--and made me smile.
P.S. *To the the 953 Goodreads contestants who didn't win: I have another giveaway going on until May 15th on my website Enter for a chance to win the whole trilogy! If that doesn't work out, you can always buy the books on Amazon.com. I'm just saying.
