In the second entry in the Empire State series, A Daring Venture introduces Doctor Rosalind Werner, a biochemist with a passion for clean, disease-free water.  Having lost her parents to cholera, Rosalind will risk everything to ensure that her family, friends, and neighbors are protected.  A high-stakes court case places Rosalind on the opposing side of Nickolas Drake, the up-and-coming Commissioner of Water for New York.  Nick is instantly attracted to Rosalind, as she seems to understand both his mechanical background and the society world he finds himself thrust into with his new-found wealth.  While Rosalind hopes to change his mind about the new technology that can solve New York City’s water crisis, Nick faces his own battles ensuring enough water reaches the population.  With controversy and unknown enemies at every turn, Rosalind and Nick are in the battle of their lives, all before the judge makes his final ruling.

Ms. Camden builds on characters first introduced in A Dangerous Legacy, while bringing more high-stakes romance to the storyline of A Daring Venture.  Fans of the Empire State series will be thrilled with this new novel!

Overall, I am absolutely thrilled with A Daring Venture!  If someone had told me that it was possible to stay up late reading a historical romance involving a real-life court case about chlorination technology, I would have probably laughed at the possibility.  Sure enough, Ms. Camden again achieves the impossible, as she includes this type of incredible historical detail within her riveting storytelling style.  Nick and Rosalind seem like a perfect fit within the book’s setting and storyline, even as they offer a cutting-edge perspective on the technology of the early 1900s.  To make it even better, Ms. Camden hints at a third novel in the series, again based on characters already introduced that find themselves in a nearly unbelievable situation of historic proportions.  With such a talent for making history utterly fascinating for her readers, it is little wonder that I find myself pre-ordering every book that Ms. Camden releases.

Special thanks to Bethany House and NetGalley for the complimentary copy of A Daring Venture!  Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
