ABOUT THE BOOK (136 pages):
Blow after blow, she hides her face and fights for her life.
Doctor Ruth Burnette has everything she has ever dreamed possible: the perfect job, a twin sister who is her best friend, and a fiancé who is retiring from professional boxing as the middleweight champion of the world.
Then came that fateful night when she witnessed a mafia execution. When her sister is murdered she knows she'll battle to the last round and never, ever throw in the towel. Now she's down for the count, in witness protection, anxious, alone except for the faithful company of her German Shepherd at her side.
As the time draws near to when she has to leave her safe little corner she stays on her toes. She has to testify against one of the darkest criminals in New York, she shores up the courage to face the accused from the witness stand. Unexpectedly, he's not the one who worries her. She wonders what coming face-to-face with his son, VICTOR KOVALEV…her former fiancé …will bring.
Will Ruth have a fighting chance against the Kovalev family, or will Victor keep her pinned ON THE ROPES?

On The Ropes by Hallee Bridgeman is a novella of suspense and romance. Ruth, a surgical resident, is witness to a Russian Mafia execution and is now in witness protection. Emotions have been like a roller coaster ride, overwhelming and threatening to destroy her, yet her faith in God sustains her. Victor, professional boxer, is the heir to the Mafia business and deeply in love with Ruth. Bridgeman brings a fast-paced, action-packed story to her readers. From the first page to last, this novella is an edge of the seat kind of book that has a couple "wow, I didn't see that coming" scenes too. Will Ruth live to testify? Will she ever be able to live a normal life without looking over her shoulder, watching for hitmen? On The Ropes is a quick, captivating read that lovers of romantic suspense won't want to miss.

ON THE ROPES BY HALLEE BRIDGEMAN
Have read other books by the author and have enjoyed them.
This one starts out with Mara and she's relocated to Western Florida and helps the pastor with the gardening.
Love how the quote from the Bible relates to the teenage boys who are there to help with some work before they are given the Wifi code.
Very precise with details of taking care of the snake bite wounds. Then the story goes back to three years earlier and the twin women are doing medical rounds as part of their medical education.
Victor, the boxer had banged up hands and they met for coffee in the morning and Dr. Ruth Burnette invited him to church later that night.
Then the story alternates between the two time frames...
Interesting learning about the boxing career as it also follows their time together in a relationship.
Frightening some of the scenes as it deals with the mob. Victor relies on his Bible to help him get through the tough days.
Found it a bit confusing to go from the present to the past where the characters are using different names. You don't find out why til later in the book.
Would have been a great story in chronological order also. Story goes from past, present and future but in mixed up order.
Discussion questions at the end along with a luncheon and recipes for the discussion.
Other works by the author are highlighted at the end.

The Book Club Network
This is a novella and it was very interesting. The main characters were well developed. The story flowed well. It kept my interest throughout. It ended well, though a bit condensed, but it is just a novella. The editing was mostly good. a few extra words in a sentence or two, nothing major. The plot held my interest and I think it would make a good "full size" novel. God's presence in the characters lives was evident. It showed God well in a non-preachy manner which might turn away some people. A good Christian read that I can recommend. Some violence but nothing graphic. This book was given to me through bookfun.org in exchange for my honest review: This review is also posted on Amazon, Goodreads, and Librarything. I tried to find this on other sites using title, author and ASIN but could not find it.
This is a great book. My only complaint is that it was so short. I was so engrossed in the story that I wanted to keep reading more. I have found that Ms. Bridgeman is a wonderful author. As I read this book I wondered how she came up with this topic and how she was able to weave such a brilliant story.
Ruth believes she has met her mate in Viktor, who is a professional boxer and part of a mafia family. Ruth does not know Viktor is part of a mafia family until she witnesses an execution by Viktor’s father. The family knows that Ruth saw the execution and are out to get her. Is Viktor out to get her as well? Ruth does not know and is put in a witness protection program for her own safety. What happens next is a brilliant story. You will not be disappointed with this book.

It was free on Amazon earlier. Didn't you get the email?
Hi Deana - do you have it now? I know it's been a couple of weeks since you posted this.
When I picked up this book, I didn’t realize it was about a boxer—thus the double meaning in the title. I empathized with the main character, Ruth, a resident doctor looking forward to finishing her medical training. She had loved a boxer, Victor, who happened to be the son of a Russian mafia family, and she now is in hiding under an assumed name. The plot and action made for an exciting story and held my interest all the way through. Surprises and danger ramp up the tension. The characters seem very realistic. I like the way Ruth and Victor grow in faith and work through things. Will their relationship reunite or fade into oblivion? I was given the book by Book Fun (The Book Club Network), and this is my honest review. Posted on FB, Amazon.
So, I sort of didn’t realize this book was in an anthology I read and reviewed before: Smoke and Mirrors.
The good news is that this story was one of my favorites out of all of them so re-reading it was a non-issue.
Hallee is such a wonderful author. I haven’t read much by her but what I have read I have really enjoyed. It amazes me how well she develops a story that is a novella, but nothing felt rushed at all. I felt I truly got to know and understand these characters.
She wove a romance and tension in this story. She also had a message of faith and learning to trust God, even when we make decisions that don’t seem to make sense to the world.
If you enjoy a good romantic suspense I think you will enjoy this one.

Doctor Ruth Burnette is a well-written heroine! Fighter Victor Kovalev accepts Christ as his savior when Ruth invites him to church but Ruth falls in love with him not knowing Victor's father runs the Russian mafia in New York. Victor and Ruth both face desperate decisions when they see three men murdered and know their lives are in danger. Hallee Bridgeman has written an great romantic suspense story of people being put in the Witness Protection Program. I recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense.
