ABOUT THE BOOK: (408 pages)

Three people—three Divine appointments

Cynthia Wells, an undercover reporter with a dark secret and in search of a story, finds more than she bargains for, including a love she never expected.

Jonathan Holms, pastor of affluent Christ Church, is stunned when God directs him to a mission where he must come to grips with a killer and his own difficult past.

Stubby White was never anything and he was sure he’d never be anything, not with all the bad breaks he’s had. But at the Beacon Mission, when he finds the promise of a new life, he must decide whether to dwell in the past or break from it.

All three are thrown together by converging circumstances involving danger and a mysterious killer who seems bent on destroying them all.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Born in Romania in 1945, Sylvia Bambola lived her early years in Germany. At seven she relocated with her adopted family and saw the Statue of Liberty and America for the first time. But the memory of those years in Germany inspired her to write Refiner's Fire, which won a Silver Angel Award, and was a Christy Finalist. Her frequent moves as an "army brat" gave her an opportunity to see America and fall in love with her new country. Bambola has authored six novels, has two grown children, teaches women's Bible studies, loves gardening and is learning the guitar.

Vickie, thank you again for reading Mercy at Midnight and for your kind words and reviews. Greatly appreciated!! Blessings

Honestly, I am ashamed to admit, I got this book last year. It took me forever to pick it up and read it. I am not really sure why. Maybe it was the cover. For some reason it just didn't grab me like I expected it to.

But wait.... God's timing is also perfect and I believe this was His time for me. Lately I have been reading alot about prayer. And interestingly enough the last two books I have read have had characters that were very strong prayer warriors and had an amazing prayer life. This was one of them. Jonathan Holms is a pastor who is practiced in listening to God, as well as talking to Him. It inspired me, when I read how much time he spent on his needs, and how he went to God and prayed about everything, and even when he really didn't like the answer, he listened and followed through with what he believed God was telling him to do. I need that more in my own life.

Another character that I fell in love with was Stubby. I could just picture him so well, maybe because I know a few Stubby's in my life. He felt hopeless, lost, and confused. He really didn't think anyone or at least almost any one cared about him. But something happens and Stubby is not himself anymore. The story is beautiful and moving.

Oh and Jonathan's Aunt Adel, she worries and frets over him, and does her best to trust God. She is such a sweet heart, and once again, she is also a prayer warrior with a few things to learn.

And Miss Emily, you can't help but love her and through her the people she loves, and the God she loves. She shines, brightly, but its Jesus in her that is shining.

And as always there are those you don't like, several of them that pop up throughout the book. But they make the story more appealing, more interesting, and more true to life. And the only thing I really was disappointed in was the ending. Oh it wasn't bad, I just wanted more. I sure hope Ms Sylvia is considering maybe a sequel to this one, there are plenty of characters to work with.

This story could be reality, maybe that is what drew me in. The characters come to life. They have real struggles, real problems, real situations. They also offer real solutions, real help and hope. I know this book would be a blessing to many!! I am so glad I finally took the time to read it. It was so worth it. Once I got started it was hard to put it down. I wish I had better words to convey the message in this book and the value of the words the author wrote. Just read it!

Thank you Sylvia for sending me a copy of this book through The Book Club Network. I wasn't asked to write a positive review. All opinions were my own.

Posted this review on my blog:

I also sent Sylvia an apology for my delay in reviewing.

Amy, thank you again for taking the time to read MERCY and for your kind and insightful comments. And no need to apologize. I'm glad the timing was right when you read it. Blessings

Mercy at Midnight delves into the gritty world of homelessness, drug use and gang violence. The ugliness of all of that is pitted against the redemptive power of Christ.

Undercover reporter, Cynthia Wells, smells a story. Two homeless men were found murdered in very similar circumstances and both have ties to a local men's shelter. When a closed shelter reopens, can she convince the pastor who runs the place that, not only is she homeless, but she's looking for work? As she snoops around, what happens when the wrong people catch wind of her curiosity?

Jonathan Holms is the pastor of the largest church in the city. He's doing a great work for God there so he's stunned when God asks him to give up his megachurch to go minister to the homeless. He's never been more sure of a call in his life, but is he up to the challenge? His faith in Jesus is strong but as danger stalks the residents of his shelter, can his prayers protect those he's coming to love like family?

Stubby White has been homeless so long he doesn't remember when he was a contributing member of society. A tragedy years ago turned his life upside down and sent him on a downward spiral that included alcohol and drugs to numb the pain. When he steps foot into Jonathan's mission, he feels safe for the first time in forever. A few days in, he's given the job of caretaker and he begins taking steps out of the abyss. Can he maintain the change his life undergoes or will he return to the life he knows best?

Wow! This book had so much rich truth in it. Believing in the face of incredible hardship, faith even when and maybe especially when life has continually beaten them down - these are repeatedly brought out and seeing these things is what makes the skeptical Cynthia start to question her own belief system.

Fair warning, this book starts pretty slow. It took me a long time to "get into it" but once I did, it was a thriller! Readers who love faith-filled suspense will enjoy Mercy at Midnight. I can definitely recommend it!
