Since I've never read the original Ben Hur nor seen the movie, this review is for this book, and this book alone. It is a very well written story. Very easy to read and flows in a very pleasing manner. You are immediately deep in the story right from the start. It never gets too slow and is never racing along either. It has parts that offer excitement, sorrow and joy sometimes almost in the same scene. It is a story about a boy who becomes a man quickly and over a few years time, learns about what true, Christian love is. He must face his own thoughts and feelings and decide how he will live his life. This is not an easy or fast process for him and others in the story. The characters are all well developed and easy to understand. I was given this book with the promise of an honest review. When I first agreed, I had doubts to my enjoying the book and almost regretted my commitment. I am very pleased to say I was very wrong. I truly enjoyed the book and read it in less than a week in the evenings. You will not be disappointed. Not a preachy book at all, full of drama and action but showing God's love for us. This book was given through bookfun.org and my review is posted there as well as Amazon, Deepershopping, Barnes and Noble, Christianbook.com, Goodreads, and Librarything.

Ben-Hur was a great read. While different from the theatrical version, it was a great historical and Biblical portrayal of what really happened in the lives of people during the time Jesus was alive.  Gives me a different perspective for our world today.  I enjoyed the read and was glad I had a chance.

I received this book for free from The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.  All opinions expressed are mine.

Ben-Hur by author Carol Wallace is an exceptionally well written rewrite of the tale originally written by her great-great grandfather, Lew Wallace. In this book the author has made the story easier to follow for today's readers. It is still the same great Christian saga but concentrates a bit more on the female characters of Judah's mother, sister, and wife.

This is the story of Judah Ben-Hur. He is a wealthy, young Jewish manager. His best friend is Messala, a Roman. These two men were raised vastly different right down to Who or what they worship. The story begins with a fast pace as the men are racing and one gets hurt. There is non-stop action, romance, inspiration, violence, murder, intrigue, betrayal, redemption, and the wonderful message of Jesus Christ. This is about true love.

Author Carol did a fabulous job with her modern take on rewriting this book yet keeping it authentic to its original self. The book is well written, organized and thought. Her characters have depth and are so defined that readers will feel they know them. The action is so well described that it made the book hard to put down. I cringed in parts and teared up. My heart broke in parts and also rejoiced.

There is a sea battle that is hard to believe but I am sure things like that actually happened. The races at the Colosseum were brutal. I enjoyed reading about the markets and scenery. I also liked that parts of the Bible were included. The author has some surprises and twists but those were also in the original book.

I definitely would recommend this book to anyone. It is well written and has so many elements to it. I gladly rate it 5 out of 5 stars. It would make a great group study. I wanted to discuss it as I was reading it. I was given the book by Book Fun (The Book Club Network) and this is my honest review. Reviews were posted on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, CBD, Deepershopping, Goodreads, and TBCN.

The original book, Ben-Hur, was published in 1880 and soon became a best seller.  The movie which came out in the 1950’s, also was a great hit so the story became a household name.  However, the great-granddaughter of the author, after reading one of the original copies, felt that it needed some changes and re-writing to bring this much loved story up-to-date for today’s readers.  She did this in a masterful way that brings the story line and characters to life again.  The narrative is very descriptive of those times and events and puts the reader right there.

The main character, Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish nobleman who was falsely accused of attempted murder sought revenge until he met a carpenter from Nazareth.  The change in his life’s desires drastically changed everything that is important.

I saw the movie and it gave me a picture of what this book portrayed, but I actually enjoyed the book more.  I would definitely recommend it for all audiences.

Although I have always heard of Ben-Hur, the movie, I had never actually seen the movie or read the book.  When the opportunity arose to read the new novel, I jumped on it.  Wow!  What an incredible tale!  I am so glad Carol Wallace, the great-great-granddaughter of Lew Wallace, the original author of Ben-Hur picked up her pen to update the old classic!

This is the story of Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish prince, who not only goes from riches to rags to riches, etc, but also encounters Christ in a different way.  And through his journey we get a vivid glimpse of Roman and Hebrew life at the time of Christ.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and highly recommend it!  For those who are in my bookclub, we probably will be reading and discussing this one soon!  My only problem with the novel was it was hard to put down and I lost some sleep as I stayed up too late reading it.  I received this book from bookfun.org in return for my honest opinion.

This is a great retelling of Ben Hur by a great -great granddaughter of the original author Lewis Wallace.  She did a great job.

I definitely would recommend this book.

What a fabulous book. I was immediately drawn into the story and had to keep reading to see what would happen to Ben-Hur and what his encounter with Jesus be like.

I have never seen the movie so I had nothing to base this book on besides the previews I have seen.

What happens to Judah is so unfair and the fact that it is done by his best friend is even more heartbreaking. But there is something special about Judah and others see that too and because of that he is given another chance.

Carol does a wonderful job of painting the picture of this time without taking away from the overall story. I really enjoyed this book and if you like Biblical fiction I am sure you will too.

This is re-written to be a smoother read and boy was it a page turner! I must admit to not ever seeing the movie. *gasp* I know, how can that be! But I wanted to read the book and it was engaging and kept my attention. This author, the great-great granddaughter of original author, has done splendidly with re-writing it. The characters are endearing and you find your heart tugging and rooting for Judah. I cannot imagine what time was like back then – but you feel immersed into it while reading and feel as if these are friends and family. I highly recommend this version!
