ABOUT THE BOOK (272 pages):

Ruby McCoy is haunted by her father's sins.... When Ruby McCoy arrives in Fairplay, her ornate carriage is followed by an entourage who heft steamer trunks, hatboxes, and traveling bags into the hotel...where she has booked the entire second floor. Upon her notorious gangster father's death, the now–wealthy Ruby, hiding under her mother's maiden name, set out to right her father's wrongs. Ruby is determined to spend every penny of the inherited "blood money" on those who paid the price for her father's crimes.
Sheriff Rex Truett doesn't trust Ruby and doesn't care who knows it. The keeper of Fairplay's law and order makes it his business to find out why a stranger—especially a beautiful, spoiled, rich, female stranger—would set up businesses, donate to schools, hire workmen to rebuild houses, and provide access to the best medical care. But when a typhoid epidemic sweeps through the city, he is forced to reconsider.

Will Rex blame Ruby for her father's sins? Or will he accept the possibility that she is trying to create—and feel—the peace her father stole?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Once upon a time, best–selling author Loree Lough literally sang for her supper, performing before packed audiences throughout the Midwest. Now and then, she blows the dust from her 6–string to croon a tune or two for her grandkids or to sing at weddings or funerals, but she mostly just writes. Over the years, her stories have earned hundreds of industry and Readers' Choice awards and 4– and 5–star reviews. Loree has nearly five million copies of her books in circulation, and in March 2014, she added her hundredth published book to the shelves. She has written fiction and nonfiction for kids and adults (2,500–plus articles and 68 short stories), and four of her novels have been optioned for movies.

I just finished reading Healing of the Heart ( Secrets on Sterling Street #3). I really enjoyed the story. I thought I knew Mavis' secret right at the beginning of the book. I was only partially right. The main characters are well developed. The supporting characters are somewhat well developed, some more than others. The story flows well and kept my interest. In fact, I finished the book in just a very few days. It wasn't heavy on Christianity, but did have a few Bible verses and such. It was definitely not preachy at all. For the most part I truly enjoyed the book. The story I definitely enjoyed. What bothers me, is the editing. This book had far too many issues with missing words. Not big words, but things like a missing "a" or "an" or "the" . It also had places where it had the word repeated on either side of another word. This upset the flow of reading for me. I also wasn't sure if some of the words used were supposed to be wrong as in the person speaking them not totally literate, or if it was an error. Example, "set awhile" instead of "sit awhile". Though annoying to me, it will not stop me from reading more from Loree Lough. This book was given to me in exchange for my honest review through Bookfun.org. Hi Victoria,
Thanks for the feedback. I loved this series of Loree's, especially this book with its emphasis on reparation for damage done (even if it was the daughter making amends on behalf of her father's crimes). I think it's a message that needs to be heard in and out of church. I apologize on behalf of Whitaker House for the editing errors. It's a long story, some of which is not mine to tell. Suffice it to say, normally the author would have gone over the manuscript and there would have been one more proof. But Loree was hospitalized at this final stage and, well, I'm pretty sure her eagle eye would have caught these as she normally does. Corrections will be made to subsequent editions. Thanks for reviewing!

What would you do if you had a father who was a thief and killer? Would you try to hide your identity from other people? I know we don't get to pick who our parents are, and that is exactly what Ruby faces in this unforgettable story of redemption , secrets and trust. After Ruby's father is hanged for his crimes, Ruby is stunned to find out that he has left her a very wealthy woman. I think at first she had a hard time taking the fortune because she knew how it was obtained. What would you do if you inherited money that you knew was tainted?

I found Ruby's character was very interesting and heartfelt. She wants to do the right thing and make amends to all the families her father hurt. It was a big task but her heart was so broken by her father's wrongdoing she needed to lessen the pain she felt in her heart. She knew this is what God wanted her to do. I loved the story and found it to be a great lesson in forgiveness and healing. Her heart must have been crushed to learn of the evil doings her father did. Was Ruby feeling guilty and somehow taking responsibility for her father's sins?

When Ruby and her mom travel to FairPlay, Colorado to continue using the inheritance there seems to be a bit more to do in this town that will be a big challenge for them. Rex Truett is the sheriff of the small town and is a bit suspicious of Ruby and her mom. He is a very strong character and I loved his unconditional love for the two children he was taking care of. Ruby and Rex sure don't see eye to eye at first. I'm not sure who was more stubborn but it sure made for many encounters with each other that were tension filled. Rex has to be asking himself " Why would a beautiful woman and her mom travel to a town where they know no one with the intentions to improve the town? "

The story is very well written and flowed at a nice pace. There are others in the town that will add a bit of intrigue to the story. There are many surprises and secrets that have people wondering who they can trust? Will Ruby be able to let go of the shame of her father's sins? Can Rex find a way to trust again? The story is filled with a glimpse into the lives of people who have trust issues, guilt, insecurity and learning to love again.

"When we're hurting, we have a choice , too. We can get all mad and mean, or go to God for comfort and strength."

Hi Deana,
Great review, thank you! As a temporary Texan with many relatives in the Lone Star State, I gotta love the Texas Book-aholic.

Nice, thanks Deana! I loved this book, and got a twinge of conviction after reading. I am my brother's keeper and need to find my inner Ruby to help make amends for those hurt by the unscrupulous characters in this world...

Healing of the HeartHealing of the Heart by Loree Lough
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Loree Lough appeals straight to the heart in this book. The plot in this book was brilliantly done. It and the storyline are really what got me first. A daughter trying to make up for her father's misdeeds by helping those he hurt is brilliant, and Ruby McCoy is just the right kind of character to pull it off.

Both main characters are written so well, and reading how the daughter intends to help others truly does touch the heart. Will she ever be free of the guilt??

With vivid characters, a wonderful story, and a lovely historical setting this is a wonderful book that will be on my forever shelves. I highly recommend this read!

Healing of the Heart by Loree Lough is a great book. I love historical fiction so this was perfect for me. The setting was great. The characters were great. Everything was great! There is a lot of conversation which kept the story flowing quickly. I can't wait to read the other books in this series!

I was given this book by Book Fun (The Book Club Network) in return for my honest review.

“Healing of the Heart, Secrets on Sterling Street,” by Loree Lough is a work of historical fiction. This is easy to read, clean and deals with topics of forgiveness and trust. The story begins in 1879, in a time when people had integrity and accepted responsibility for their actions. Most of the story takes place in a small town, Fairplay, Colorado.
Ruby, our main character, has inherited her father’s fortune. Sadly, his wealth appears to have come from his life of crime! Ruby’s new goal in life is to right the wrongs that her father committed. She decides to travel, helping out families, paying all of them back, for what her father had stolen through his many years of criminal living.

Ruby is a young woman with great integrity and character. She has a strong desire to do what is right in the eyes of God. When she reaches the last town, the place of her father’s last crime, she has to decide if this is finally the place she can stay. She is tired of moving from town to town, always hiding her name and keeping secrets. If the townsfolk discover who she really is, will they hate or accept her? Will they be able to forgive her? To find out, you will have to read “Healing of the Heart.”

This is the story of misplaced self guilt and sense of unworthiness.  It shows how these feelings can rob a person of what is really true and good.

For the last five years, Ruby McCoy, the daughter of the caught and hanged notorious gangster, Verdell Lundgren, had been living under a different name with her mother and moving around from place to place to avoid being known.  Ruby had been entrusted with her father’s millions when he died which she felt was a curse that she had to bear.  She believed that her life now had to be dedicated to going to the towns and cities where her father had destroyed people’s lives and make up for his sins by building schools, hospitals, orphanages, rebuilding houses, and donating to families of his victims.

As the story unfolded, Ruby and her mother had just arrived in another of the victims’ towns.  She began her acts of mercy, but did not count on the sheriff, Rex Truett, as someone who was interested in what she was up to and did not trust her motives.  The author wove the sheriff’s past into Ruby’s past and the secrets multiplied.  Would this destroy any hope of a relationship between these two?

I enjoyed this inspirational romance with its many surprises and the author’s ability to bring so many interesting characters into the story.

I received this free book from Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review which is also posted on Goodreads and Barnes and Noble.

Nice review, thanks Robbi! I loved the basic premise of this book. Even though she was not complicit in her father's crimes, Ruby had the means and the gumption to make amends where possible. I wanted Loree to go back and write stories about the other towns she visited, but I guess that would get complicated...
